HIPS’ approach to prototyping is playful exploration as well as meticulous. “Flat shaping is not something we really love here,” says Arocena. “We started on the body and worked out the proportions on the mannequin as we hung up, then we switched to paper and kept adjusting accordingly.” The reason is that HIPS shapes often go well—an exaggerated bubble trim for Dauphinette or a unique corset for Elena Velez—usually looking better when they’re resolved on the body. “On the body, you find out in real time if something is working. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about finding a solution for us. There’s no pattern block for something like this.” Suit for Dauphinette, Spring 2023 ready-to-wear.
To date, HIPS has worked with three CFDA award winners: Rogers, Elena Velez and Theophilio, in addition to Puppets and Puppets, The Academy NY and 5000 Studio. Photo: William Eadon / Courtesy of the New York Academy Having found their niche on New York’s design vanguard, Datinguinoo and Arocena have witnessed first-hand observe the above energy change. “There was a renaissance of people wanting to do more for themselves,” says Arocena. “The do-it-yourself culture has become very popular and emerging designers are deciding that they want to not only create salable items, but also create fantasy.” The pair agree that this culminates in September 2021, the first season returning to live shows “after” the pandemic. “They are not afraid, they just want what they want and know what they want to show, ” she added.

Although they’re not based in the Apparel District in Manhattan and their approach is less rigorous than those of the studios there, HIPS still feels part of this predominantly immigrant community. “America is the land of immigrants,” said Datinguinoo, “but a lot of times when immigrants, family members come here, they get a job, whether it’s sewing, taxi drivers, whatever, so their kids will do it’ not having to do a labor job. So their children will be doctors and lawyers. They don’t really instill craftsmanship when you’re an immigrant because for them it’s not the American dream, because it’s not craftsmanship, it’s labor.” Arocena continued, “It was the default of past generations, but we here are a choice.” For the upcoming fall of 2023, HIPS is partnering with Puppets and Puppets and Dauphinette, as well as Christopher John Rogers, who shows up on the pre-collection schedule. “It felt so bizarre and we never wanted to ask for anything because they weren’t our design,” says Arocena. “These designers would still be successful without us, because they have undeniably great stories and visions, which is why we chose them. But it’s an honor to be trusted with their imagination and do some of the most important things that define who they are. ”
