To be clear, up until this point, I’ve never dated a guy who can lift his own backpack without difficulty, let alone fix a tire. There was something about my newly single person that subconsciously summoned these traditionally masculine guys. And I love it. It reminds me of something my mother told me about 10 years ago. Another problem: I don’t even understand who or what I’m looking for. My past relationships have taught me a lot about what doesn’t work for me, but not much about what works. However, I was somewhat familiar with their kind, raised by traditionally masculine men. My grandfather was a soldier and plumber who farmed, hunted for food, and insisted on teaching me how to skin a deer at the age of 12. My dad drove a pickup truck, watched sports on TV, knows about baked goods and is strangely excited about trips to the dump. This is what most men in upstate New York, where I grew up, are like. At the age of 18, I moved to London, then Brooklyn, where this type of man may be extinct. I started dating vegans who carried small notebooks and drank gin gimlets. It feels so amazing and strange—how soft their hands are! These men feel more advanced, more intellectual and like… rich. They were on installing an air conditioner. You can pay someone for that! They are busy checking email. At that time, I was the female version of this unfortunate urban man. I see myself as a modern Carrie Bradshaw who knows nothing about cooking, using the kitchen for storage. I vehemently refused permission. I consider these – in myself and in my partners – as badges of honor for the city. Looking back, I think it was just called incompetent.
