I have reviewed my notes from the time of the Kondo interview, and although I agree that she should not be responsible for the fragile mental state of parents around the world, there is a a number of tidbits that make this new revelation all the more obvious. On page one of Spark Joy, Kondo writes: “Life only begins when you keep your house in order.” She’s built an empire on this, following her two worldwide bestsellers with a Netflix series and a line of archival merchandise. So we were Kon-ed? About that, I don’t know. Having a tidy home is a luxury, there is the time and mental space to get your things organized. Maybe it’s a “vibration change”, but judging from the popularity of the “depression room” and “the doomsday heap” on TikTok, people probably appreciate people who are honest enough to show how messy their lives really are. So why are we mad at Marie Kondo for doing that?
The whole quote she said through an interpreter while promoting her new book was: “I gave up on that in a way that was good for me. Now I realize how important it is for me to enjoy time at home with my children.” I’m sure Kondo’s house isn’t in ruins — but she’s bold, maybe even brave, to admit that motherhood frustrates all of us. I’ve heard that parenting is often described as humbling and, although cliché, it’s true. All preconceptions about yourself are challenged daily by small, bubbly human beings.
