Met Gala 2022: See Every Celebrity Arrival, Read the Latest Stories, and Get Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Here** Not everyone can attend the Met Gala dinner–but now, everyone can enjoy it. The chefs behind this year’s menu—Lauren Von der Pool, Melissa King, Marcus Samuelsson, and Amirah Kassem— are sharing their recipes for the delectable dishes served on fashion’s biggest night. Each simultaneously honored their own style and the theme of “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” when coming up with their culinary contribution. For cocktail hour, Von der Pool put a vegan spin on the classic American finger food of deviled eggs, opting to fill Yukon potatoes instead. (“These hors d’oeuvres speak to the grandmothers and the aunties who have created many of the American recipes that we all know today,” she tells Vogue.) Meanwhile, Melissa King (winner of Top Chef: All Stars) spiced things up with her appetizer of hamachi crudo with olives and Sichuan chili in citrus broth. “I wanted to create a dish that embodied the beautiful mix of vibrant cultures and ethnicities of immigrants that make up the DNA of America today,” King told Vogue.
“The cherry looks like a cherry,” Brookyln Peltz Beckham says, squinting at a sundae up close. “But the stem is too sticky-uppy. I think it’s cake!” Oh, yes. Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz Beckham are just the latest people to participate in the TikTok-turned-Netflix-show trend: Is it a real life object, or is it cake? Objects that are testing—and occasionally tricking—their eyes today? Pancakes, a burger, a cherry pie, and more. (Lucky Brooklyn is on tasting duty since Nicola is dairy-free.) To be fair, the odds were stacked against them: the uncanny creations were crafted by Flour Shop founder—and Met Gala pastry chef—Amirah Kassem. Her cookbook, The Power of Sprinkles, showed her absolute mastery of hyperrealistic recipes, including a Chinese takeout container, avocado toast, a bowl of Lucky Charms, and a bucket of popcorn. Although, as the couple admits, they’ve had some practice at this game: on their wedding day, some of their extravagant tiered cake was actually made of cardboard for support reasons. “They didn’t tell us what one was what,” Brooklyn says. “We were trying to cut the cardboard—like sawing it in half!”
As for the menu? Many of Mandolin’s Miami favorites will make it to Los Angeles, from their Greek and Turkish sampler platters and village salad to their grilled octopus and whole Mediterranean sea bass. Opening next door in a whitewashed cottage will also be Mrs. Mandolin, a home and lifestyle shop dedicated to the ease of Mediterranean living. It will carry everything from homewares to pantry items imported from Greece and Turkey—olive oils, jams, honeys, teas, herbs and spices—and designer clothing from the same region, such as airy dresses by Lug Von Siga. Koutsioukis says she sought to answer the question, “If I could have my dream home in Greece, what would I look like?” As a nod to their new coastal home, Mrs. Mandolin will also carry select pieces from California-based designers such as Lisa Marie Fernandez.
