The daytime temperatures in Napa Valley are running mild this October, yet the nights are cool. And that feel-good climate was only heightened this past weekend by the arrival of Rimowa, the German luxury luggage specialists, who set up shop at The Estate in Yountville to preview their newest aluminum-clad accessory: The Twelve Bottle Case. The piece—which, according to the label, can “hold any standard silhouette–from Bordeaux to Bourgogne wines, plus wider Champagne bottles”—also features Rimowa’s signature anodized grooved metal, along with a leather handle and glossy corners, giving it a vintage airman look. Generous cushioning protects the vessels, and there are even TSA-approved locks for added security.
But the Twelve Bottle Case comes with a particularly impressive pedigree: It’s unlikely the design would even exist were it not for LeBron James. In addition to his GOAT basketball player status, James is a major wine connoisseur, and the entire idea for a Rimowa wine case began when he was looking through the brand’s archives a few months back. A discussion was sparked after he saw an old model that had been created to hold both a wine bottle and stemware, with James asking about the possibility of a new, multi-bottle carrier—and tracking the progress of the case as Rimowa’s engineers worked on its development.
James is, after all, known for his impeccable style, and the attention to detail that comes with it: Thom Browne short-suits, fuchsia Ambush Nike Air Force One’s, Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra bracelets all included. So the unofficial collab between James and Rimowa, which is equally as stylish and uncompromising, feels like a clever move on both ends; the Twelve Bottle Case is as good-looking as it is useful. “It was special for me to see an idea and a conversation we had turn into such an incredible product innovation,” James tells Vogue. “This one combines two things I love, Rimowa and wine, to create something that adds value to the travel experience. And I travel a lot, so I’m excited about this piece being in the collection.” When asked as to his favorite varietal, James says, succinctly: “I drink all types, from all over the world.” (Though Napa-born vintages are up there, he adds.)
